Extend the Life of Your Area Rug - Send It to the Spa!

We are pleased to have partnered with Heirloom® Oriental Rug Cleaning Ltd. They utilize time honoured techniques and modern equipment for the most thorough cleaning possible.

Based in Calgary, they are a small family business – with a big reputation. They clean all types of loose area rugs and specialize in washing fine oriental rugs and collectible textiles.

Immersion Washing vs. Steam Cleaning

Did you know? … Oriental and loose woven area rugs are not constructed in the same way as your traditional carpeting. They should not be cleaned ‘on location’ like wall to wall carpeting.

Check out this video for tips on caring for your rug, the process and equipment used to wash your area rug and why it is so important in extending the life of your investment.

Heirloom® Cares For Your Rug Like It's Their Own

Whether it is a machine made rug from Home Depot or a priceless antique, your rug is treated with the utmost care. They have washed rugs that are over 225 years old and silk rugs with values of over $100,000!

7 Step Process of Washing Your Area Rug

The cleaning process is customized for each rug using tools and equipment designed specifically for the cleaning of oriental rugs. This results in a thorough and effective, yet gentle, cleaning.

Depending on the particular fibres, dyes, soils, and construction of the rug, a wide range of cleaning techniques are drawn from.

Your rug gets a thorough inspection with photo documentation and notes made on any possible repairs or areas of concern. Measurements are taken of the square footage, including the fringe as a large amount of time is often spent getting the fringes to look as good as they can.

An automatic rug duster gently and thoroughly removes dust and dirt from rugs of all kinds and shapes and is a very important step. Even with regular vacuuming, handmade rugs have a unique ability to hold pounds of sand and dust which have a cutting effect on rug yarns.

Testing your rug for weak dyes is another step in the process and dictates how to proceed with the wash. Many times the dyes can be set to control bleeding. Some rugs will bleed no matter what steps are taken and in this case it will be explained to you before moving ahead with cleaning.

Washing is most often completed in a European designed machine that allows your rug to gently “swim” causing water to flow through the pile removing soluble soil and any sedimentary soils that remain after dusting. This gets your rug cleaner than any other method used. Special bath water leaves your rug softer, smelling clean and fresh without any perfumes and works remarkably well with pet odour issues.

After washing, your rug is rolled up, placed into a custom made centrifugal rug wringer and spun at 900 rpm. While spinning, water is injected to flush out any remaining cleaning agents and suspended soils. This works the same as your front load washer and when spinning is complete the rugs are just slightly damp.

Now ready for the drying phase, your rug is either hung or laid flat in a climate controlled room. Fans, de-humidifiers and air exchangers remove the final percentage of moisture and the rug is allowed to dry as long as necessary. When your rug is returned to you it will need to acclimatize to the humidity level in your home which should only take a day or two.

After all the other spa activities are complete and your rug is dry, fringe cleaning is completed. Our detailed process and special fringe tool can help brighten the fringe and often times return the fibres to like new again without the use of harmful bleaches. Your rug then gets a final vacuuming and inspection and is then rolled up ready for delivery.
